As we head towards the end of the year, it’s a great time to reflect on what makes Sherfield Park Runners such a special club. We’ve continued to grow, welcome new faces and achieve some fantastic things together, while staying true to what matters most: being a club where everyone belongs, whatever their pace, experience or ambitions.

Looking back over the year, there’s plenty to celebrate. Our members have taken on everything from local 5k or 10k fun runs, cross country relays to half marathons, marathons and some seriously tough endurance challenges. We’ve seen runners travel further afield for events, enjoy running adventures on holiday and continue to make the most of our regular weekends at Basingstoke parkrun.

Closer to home, our Couch to 5K graduates showed what can be achieved with encouragement, commitment and a supportive group around you. We also came together for club events, including our own sports day, and supported Sherfest by helping to organise the children’s races. These moments are just as important as the race results. They bring us together, strengthen friendships and remind us that running is about much more than the miles.

    Growing together, supporting everyone

As the club grows, I’m keen that we continue to offer something for everyone. Some members are chasing personal bests, others are working towards their first 5K, and many simply enjoy getting outside, keeping active and catching up with friends. All those goals matter, and every achievement deserves to be celebrated.

I’m also pleased that we’ve been able to share more discounts with members this year, helping to make running a little more affordable. From caps and sunglasses to other essential running gear, every saving helps when the costs of taking part can add up.

Of course, a club like ours doesn’t run itself. I’d like to thank our committee, who meet regularly to discuss club matters, make decisions and keep things moving in the right direction. Their time and commitment help create the opportunities and experiences that our members enjoy throughout the year. Thank you, too, to all our volunteers who give their time and energy to support club activities and local events.

Most importantly, thank you to every member of Sherfield Park Runners. Whether you’ve been with us for years or joined recently, you help make this club what it is. Every run, every encouraging word, every shared achievement and every helping hand contributes to our community.

Looking ahead to our club awards night

I’m really looking forward to our annual club awards night in December. It’s a chance to get together, celebrate the achievements of the year and recognise the people who make Sherfield Park Runners such a welcoming and successful club.

The awards are an important part of the evening, but it’s about much more than trophies or individual performances. It’s an opportunity to celebrate our volunteers, recognise the commitment shown by members and thank everyone who has helped make the club what it is today.

As we look towards the Autumn and Winter months of running, racing and spending time together, I hope we can keep building on everything we’ve achieved while holding on to the friendly, inclusive spirit that brought us together in the first place.

    No one runs alone.
